The History major is frequently chosen by students who wish to pursue careers in such fields as teaching, law, library and archival work and journalism, as well as in areas less directly related to the study of history. These include fields in business and industry. Winthrop also offers licensure as a Secondary School Teacher of Social Studies.
A recent gift from Larry and Vivian Carroll of Charlotte, NC, has created the Fred Hembree History Scholarship for an outstanding junior or senior History major. The Carrolls have committed $100,000 for this scholarship, and they have also challenged other donors to support the scholarship by promising to match gifts up to $50,000 per year over the next three years.
The Fred Hembree History Scholarship has been established to honor Larry Carroll's cousin, the late Dr. Fred Hembree, Class of 1980. Dr. Hembree majored in History while at Winthrop and was a professor of History at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Fla., until his death in July 2010. A nationally recognized scholar and author on the French Revolution, Dr. Hembree was a native of Rock Hill. Your gift to support this scholarship will be doubled by the match Larry and Vivian have promised to do for the next three years.
Your gift to the History Department Fund or Fred Hembree Scholarship will help students with more ability and promise than financial resources gain access to the excellent education and college experience provided by Winthrop University.
